PowerBuilder Roadmap

Learn about Appeon’s future plans for PowerBuilder, including new AI developer features in the upcoming PowerBuilder 2025 R3 and release schedule.

Bruce Armstrong

Development Lead, Integrated Data Services

New Features in PowerBuilder 2025 R2

Learn about the new development features in PowerBuilder 2025 R2.
Topics covered include code editor productivity and navigation improvements, dynamic DPI support, IDE usability enhancements, multilingual runtime resources, SVG support, advanced executable security flags (beta), and updates to PowerServer and PowerClient. The session also highlights key enhancements to DataWindow/DataStore, Jump, Source Control, Solution management, CrypterObject, WebBrowser, RibbonView, and SMTPClient.

Using OAuth2 Authentication with SmtpClient

Learn how to secure your email sending application by implementing OAuth2 with SmtpClient. Topics covered include the core concept of Authorization vs. Authentication, why OAuth2 is vital for securing credentials and enabling features like MFA, the mechanics of the Authorization Flow and Device Authorization Flow, and practical configuration steps for both Azure and Gmail.

Implementing Single Sign-On with PowerBuilder

Learn how to use an OAuth provider to implement single sign-on.  Topics covered include implementing the OAuth provider in a Docker hosted Authentik instance; however, the technique is pretty much the same for any OAuth provider.

Using AI to write and maintain PowerBuilder code

Excited about the AI capabilities coming in PowerBuilder 2025 R3?
You don’t have to wait. If your PowerBuilder 2025 projects use the solution format, you can start putting AI to work today.
In this session, we’ll look at using AI to create and update your existing PowerBuilder code from outside the PowerBuilder IDE.

AI-Powered PowerBuilder Maintenance: from Code Insight to Action

Through two practical scenarios, we will see how Visual Expert AI can help PowerBuilder teams understand unfamiliar code, identify and assess issues, suggest improvements, and turn analysis results into coordinated remediation actions.

Performance Optimization with AI – A Field Report

How AI, combined with PowerBuilder’s own built-in tools, helped reduce a report’s runtime from 8 hours to 8 minutes.

AI and the Future of PowerBuilder: An Appeon MVP’s Perspective

AI is becoming a daily assistant in software development, opening up new possibilities for code generation, application workflows, and runtime experiences – even in PowerBuilder.
After decades of developing with PowerBuilder, I’ll share my perspective on how AI is changing the way we build, maintain, and modernize applications. We’ll start with a brief background knowledge, then explore the opportunities and challenges AI brings to the PowerBuilder ecosystem and application modernization. I’ll also share a practical example of using AI to support end-user decision-making in PowerServer, and reflect on how our role as developers is evolving – from writing code line by line to guiding AI toward solutions that address real business needs.

Using Generative AI to Build a Web Application from a PB REST API

Let’s be honest: who never hoped that the next version of PB would offer easy full-web deployment? Appeon Web and PowerServer have brought the concept of Installable Web App and Installable Cloud App within everyone’s reach, applications that can be accessed from a web server. But full web also means zero-installation and cross-platform. In this session, you’ll learn how we transformed in few weeks a specific module of a large PowerServer application, designed for a general user base, into a full-web application thanks to generative-AI trained to prepare a Vue.js project based on PB REST API.

Preserving PB investments in modern times

Client/server PowerBuilder apps were built to last — resilient, fast, dependable. But “built to last” isn’t “built for today”: customers now expect cloud access, modern UI, web/mobility, and integration with the tools they already use.

This session maps the real options for PB developers in 2026 — staying current with PB2025, extending reach with PowerServer and PowerClient, embedding modern UI via WebView2, and, for those ready to go further, rehosting business logic in .NET while replacing the presentation layer entirely. We’ll weigh what each path costs, what it preserves, and where AI is starting to shift the economics of the bigger moves.

No single answer fits every application — the goal is a clearer map, so you can match strategy to your own system.
